Record keeping systems used in most medical institutions today are cumbersome and antiquated. "When I worked for the US Army's Defense Medical Systems program, I saw how little coordination there is between different departments and agencies for tracking individual medical records," says Aliron President Cora Alisuag. "I've seen patients carrying boatloads of their medical records from one doctor to the next - everything is on paper."

To improve patient services, Aliron International – through its affiliate, CORAnet Solutions, LLC – is currently developing a virtual, secure, paperless technology that stores an individual's medical record and gives medical staff access to those records through the Internet, networked computers and handheld devices. This smart media technology will allow immediate file transfer of medical data to almost anywhere in the world and enable emergency medical personnel to access quickly a patient's records, even if that person is unconscious.

"Our system uses a tiny, smart media card to hold the records," says Alisuag. "It also includes biometrics fingerprinting equipment that will provide secure identification of patients. By combining a variety of current and available off-the-shelf, state-of-the-art technologies into a virtual medical records system, we will be able to keep costs down."
